Staff and administration at the Naramata Elementary School have expressed their desire to have a school/co-operative garden established on their School grounds. The School District has agreed, in principle, to allow a designated area of the school yard, east of the parking lot, to be used for this purpose.
In response to this initiative, a group of interested volunteers from Naramata have come together and formulated a plan for the implementation and operation of such a garden on this site. If granted formal approval by the District, these volunteers are prepared to form a registered Society to operate the Garden which will be governed by the rules and procedures set out by the Societies Act of British Columbia. The Society will also follow all rules and regulations set out by School District 67. The members of the Society will provide the manpower and skills required for the construction and maintenance of the garden. Installation will be completed in time for planting in the spring of 2010.
The following are benefits that a community garden will provide:
The initiative proposed by the Naramata Elementary School reflects the growing impetus of school curriculums to introduce agricultural and environmental awareness to the classroom.
The objective of this Garden would be to provide an experiential learning environment for the students enrolled at the Naramata Elementary School. As such, four garden plots (one for each division) will be reserved for the School’s use. In the event the School identifies a need for more space as the project matures, these needs would be accommodated.
After the needs of the Naramata Elementary School are met, residents of Electoral Area E will be invited to join the proposed Society for a nominal fee and to work his/her own plot. Unassigned plots will be utilized for community garden space, maintained by the Society’s members as a whole. The site plan includes an area of the Garden to be specially designed as a meeting space thus providing a social environment as well as an educational space where gardening skills can be shared. Given the strategic location of the Garden, the site design incorporates perimeter beds that will be used for plantings to enhance and beautify Robinson Avenue, with the potential bonus of creating a traffic-calming effect.
The site design has made provision for access to individuals with limited mobility.
The Naramata Community Garden Society provides space for residents to garden together - to create a shared vision, to work collaboratively, and to cultivate a place for individuals, families and friends to learn about and to experience the rewards of gardening.
